The Wealthy Americans Escaping Stateside Tumult by Moving to New Zealand
Nash, a former minister in Jacinda Ardern’s Labour Party government, lists the reasons why the wealthy would want to move to the bottom of the world: uncertainty in Europe around Russian President Putin, tensions between China and Taiwan in the South China Sea, “the tinderbox that is the Middle East,” and, above all, the Trump administration.

“You’ve got a president who has declared war on Harvard University,” he says. “You’ve got the Democrats who didn’t win the election. You’ve got some Republicans who are concerned about the direction of the country. This is just a polarizing president that has moved the dial for a lot of people, from thinking about [leaving the U.S.] to putting those thoughts into action.”

"You've got a war going on in Europe. You've got the tinderbox, which is the Middle East," he said. "You've got a change in the U.S. administration, which is causing more polarization than we’ve seen in a long, long time.

Nearly half the investors who have applied hail from the US, representing 85 applications, followed by China, 26, and Hong Kong, 24. Residents from countries across Asia and Europe make up the rest of the applicants.

“Nearly everyone who is applying is applying because of the changes they’re seeing under the Trump administration,” said Stuart Nash, a former Labour party minister, who now runs Nash Kelly Global, an immigration and relocation consultancy.

The move is part of a broader strategy by the Luxon-led government to stimulate economic growth while retaining key housing restrictions on non-residents.

Govt to relax immigration settings to attract wealthy foreign investors
Former Labour Minister Stuart Nash, now founder of consultancy outfit Nash Kelly Global, launched the Active Investor Plus visa in 2022 but today said the coalition Government’s changes amended settings that weren’t “quite right”.

“There are competitor countries that very clearly understand the economic and social value of having these individuals actively participating in their economy, and so are creating investor visas that encourage the super-wealthy to relocate.

“New Zealand is uniquely placed to take advantage of this current level of geopolitical uncertainty, but the first version of the AIP didn’t have the settings quite right to attract the very best. These changes go a long way to remedying this.”
